The Cubs’ affiliates had a decent end of the week. Boise pulled to within a game of first place with help from Carlos Penalver. Kane County posted a couple of wins, while Iowa received an excellent spot start from Casey Coleman. Tennessee kept its grip on first place thanks to Javier Baez and two game winning home runs. Both Kris Bryant and Dan Vogelbach have settled in well and are contributing to Daytona’s playoff push.

Short-Season A – Boise Hawks (14-9) (35-26)
(W) One day after scoring a season high in runs, Boise set a new season high on Wednesday and demolished Eugene 13-2. The game was scoreless for three innings and the Hawks were looking up at a 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the fourth inning before the offense got going. Rony Rodriguez (2-for-5) reached one out double and scored on a single by Cael Brockmeyer (3-for-4 with a RBI). David Bote (1-for-2 with a home run and three RBI) walked and he and Brockmeyer scored on a fielder’s choice and throwing error. Boise broke the game open in the sixth after Rodriguez and Brockmeyer singled and trotted in on a three-run homer by Bote. Carlos Penalver (2-for-4 with two RBI) restarted the inning with a single and scored on a triple by Kevin Encarnacion (2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI). Encarnacion scored on a throwing error. Jacob Rogers (1-for-4) walked to start the seventh but was wiped out on a force play by Jordan Hankins. A double by Brockmeyer and a walk to Bote loaded the bases for Penalver, whose single scored Hankins and Brockmeyer. Encarnacion then cranked a three-run home run to complete the scoring.
One of the Northwest League’s leading pitchers, James Pugliese, took the mound and did not disappoint as he allowed an earned run and struck out five in six innings. Zack Godley continued to baffle the Emeralds. Godley picked up four strikeouts and gave up an earned run in two innings. Scott Frazier had a 1-2-3 ninth and struck out a batter.

(W) It was a series sweep for Boise on Thursday as they moved to within one game of first place by beating Eugene 8-3. Dillon Maples has shown better command since moving to the Northwest League, and he struck out nine in five scoreless innings. Corbin Hoffner experienced a rare bad outing as he allowed two earned runs in two innings, while Carlos Martinez-Pumarino gave up another earned run in an inning of work. Jasvir Rakkar struck out two and held the Emeralds scoreless in the ninth.
The Hawks got on the board early after Kevin Encarnacion (1-for-3 with two RBI) led off the game with a walk. Encarnacion advanced to second on a balk, stole third, and scored on a throwing error. Danny Lockhart drew a walk to start the second and singles by David Bote (1-for-2) and Carlos Penalver (2-for-3) loaded the bases. Lockhart scored on a double play. The third inning began with a double by Rony Rodriguez (2-for-5) and he scored on a home run from Lance Rymel (1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI). Bote was then hit by a pitch and moved to second on an errant pick-off attempt. Penalver doubled and a single by Encarnacion drove in both runners. Bote, Penalver, and Encarnacion all drew walks in the fifth and Bote scoring on a force. A wild pitch plated Penalver.

(W) Boise ran their streak to four in a row on Friday by beating Tri-City 6-2. Jose Rosario grabbed his first victory of the season by striking out three and allowing an earned run in five innings. Jose Arias followed and struck out three in three scoreless innings. Tyler Bremer gave up a meaningless earned run in the ninth.
Kevin Encarnacion (2-for-4) led off the game for the Hawks with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored two groundouts later. Boise added two more in the third after Encarnacion doubled and Shawon Dunston Jr. (1-for-2) walked. Both runners scored on a double by Jacob Rogers (2-for-4 with three RBI). Carlos Penalver walked and stole second to start the seventh. Encarnacion and Dunston walked and Penalver ended up scoring on a sacrifice fly. The Hawks kept up the pressure on in the ninth after Penalver walked and went all the way to third on two wild pitches. Dunston then walked and Penalver scored on a balk. Rogers notched his second double of the game and plated Dunston.

(L) After a nice win streak, Boise managed only four hits on Saturday as they were embarrassed 11-0 by Tri-City. Carlos Penalver stayed hot. Penalver went 2-for-3 on Saturday and ran his average up to .441 over his last ten games. Danny Lockhart was 1-for-4 while Lance Rymel went 1-for-3. It was a tough night for the Hawks’ pitchers as Michael Wagner received his second start and allowed three earned runs in three innings. Juan Carlos Paniagua gave up six runs (four earned) and struck out two in three innings. Sam Wilson pitched the final two innings and surrendered two earned runs.

Low Class-A – Kane County Cougars (20-33) (50–69)
(L) Kane County made a valiant effort on Wednesday but ended up losing 5-4 to Burlington. Starter Starling Peralta spotted the Bees four earned runs in the first inning then didn’t allow any more over the remainder of his 5.1 innings. Peralta struck out four batters. Sheldon McDonald tossed 1.2 scoreless innings. The Cougars tested the limits of closer Michael Hamann and it ended up costing them. Hamann gave up an earned run while striking out a batter in 1.1 innings. Kane County fought back from their deficit in the fourth after Willson Contreras drew a two out walk and Marco Hernandez (1-for-4) singled to set up Reggie Golden (1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI). Golden blasted a three-run home run. The Cougars tied the game in the eighth when Jeimer Candelario (1-for-3 with a home run) hit a solo shot.

(W) In a game that saw a total of only seven hits on Thursday, Kane County pushed across a run in the second inning and held on to a 1-0 win over Burlington. The sole run of the game came on a solo home run by Marco Hernandez (1-for-3 with a home run).
Tyler Skulina was stretched out to three innings and he struck out four batters. Rob Zastryzny followed and also went three innings while fanning four. Nathan Dorris added four more strikeouts to the total as he completed two innings. Steve Perakslis picked up his sixth save with a perfect ninth.

(L) The Cougars could not mount an attack on Friday and they lost 5-1 to Burlington. Once again, the lone run for Kane County came on a solo home run. Willson Contreras (2-4 with a home run) went deep in the second inning. Felix Pena got the start and allowed three runs (two earned) while striking out five in six innings. Justin Amlung struck out two while allowing two earned runs in two innings. Al Yevoli pitched a scoreless ninth with a pair of strikeouts.

(W) Kane County went toe-to-toe with Clinton and came out on top 7-6 … the lone beacon of victory for the Cubs’ system on Saturday. Jeimer Candelario reached with a two-out walk and a single from Rock Shoulders (2-for-3 with a RBI) put runners on the corners. Carlos Escobar (1-for-5 with two RBI) doubled in both Candelario and Shoulders. Kane County increased their lead in the second after Reggie Golden (1-for-3 with a RBI) walked and Trevor Gretzky reached on a force attempt. Golden scored on a single by Oliver Zapata (2-for-3 with a RBI). Looking at a 6-3 deficit in the seventh, the Cougars rallied back after Zapata singled and took second on a wild pitch. Rock Shoulders doubled in Zapata. Marco Hernandez (1-for-4) singled to put runners on first and third. A base hit by Giuseppe Papaccio (2-for-4 with a RBI) scored Shoulders. Golden then delivered an RBI single that plated Hernandez with the tying run. Gioskar Amaya (1-for-5) led off the eighth with a double, was sacrificed to third and later scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
Michael Heesch had what could be considered a typical start. Heesch allowed three runs (two earned) with a strikeout in six innings. Andrew McKirahan was greeted rudely by the Lumber Kings and he gave up three earned runs in 1.1 innings. Michael Hamann picked up his second win with 1.2 scoreless innings.

High Class–A – Daytona Cubs (29-19-1) (64-50-1)
(W) The effect of all the rainouts are starting to show as Daytona played their second consecutive doubleheader on Wednesday and beat Clearwater 5-1 in game one. The D-Cubs scored all of their runs in the second inning after Kris Bryant (1-for-3 with a home run) led off with a solo home run, his second in two days. Anthony Giansanti was hit by a pitch to restart things and Bijan Rademacher walked. A single by Chadd Krist (2-for-3 with a RBI) scored Giansanti. Rademacher and Krist executed a double steal. Elliot Soto followed with a walk and a base hit by Zeke DeVoss (1-for-2 with a RBI) scored Rademacher. A force play off the bat of Wes Darvill scored both Krist and Soto.
Ben Wells once again had his sinker working and he induced eight groundouts in 5.1 innings while allowing an earned run. Frank Del Valle struck out two as he finished up the final 1.2 innings.

(L) Daytona managed only two hits in the nightcap and they lost 2-0 to Clearwater in game two. Kyler Burke did not pitch a bad game. Burke allowed an earned run and struck out three in four innings. Lendy Castillo also notched three strikeouts and gave up an earned run in three innings. Anthony Giansanti went 1-for-3 and Yaniel Cabezas was 1-for-2 in the loss.

(L) The bullpen failed Daytona on Thursday and the D-Cubs lost 4-2 to Clearwater. Starter C.J. Edwards had a good outing. Edwards struck out three batters in five scoreless innings. Austin Reed gave up three earned runs in two innings, while the recently activated Ryan Searle allowed an earned run in two innings. The D-Cubs actually scored the first run of the game in the sixth after Dan Vogelbach (1-for-4) doubled and scored on a single by Kris Bryant (2-for-4 with a RBI). Bijan Rademacher (1-for-3) drew a one out walk in the seventh, stole second, and scored on a single from Elliot Soto (1-for-4 with a RBI).

(W) Daytona was able to bounce back after two losses and beat Brevard County 5-1 on Friday. Corey Black was in control as he struck out eight and allowed an earned run in five innings. Zach Cates followed and struck out six batters over three scoreless innings. Jeffrey Lorick pitched a perfect ninth.
After spotting the Manatees a run, the D-Cubs tied the game in the second after Kris Bryant (2-for-4) singled and scored on a double by Anthony Giansanti (1-for-3 with two RBI). Daytona took the lead in the third after Elliot Soto (1-for-3) led off with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a groundout. Wes Darvill (1-for-4) singled and scored when Dustin Geiger (1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI) stroked his 14th home run. The D-Cubs added a run in the sixth when Dan Vogelbach (2-for-4) singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. A base hit by Bryant put runners on first and third, and Vogelbach scored on a groundout.

(L) Sometimes, you just don’t have “it” during a baseball season, which was the case for Daytona on Saturday as they lost 11-2 to Brevard County. Ivan Pineyro was shelled for six earned runs while striking out four in five innings. Yao-Lin Wang couldn’t do much better and he gave up three earned runs in 2.1 innings. Lendy Castillo surrendered two runs (one earned) in 0.2 innings. The D-Cubs were down 4-0 in the fourth when Dan Vogelbach (1-for-3) singled and scored on a double by Kris Bryant (2-for-5 with a RBI). Daytona was able to scratch out a run in the eight after Vogelbach walked, Bryant singled, and Anthony Giansanti (1-for-4 with a RBI) drove Vogelbach in with a base hit.

Double-A – Tennessee Smokies (33-21) (67-56)
(W) Tennessee took it to Chattanooga on Wednesday and beat their in-state rivals 6-2. Dae-Eun Rhee continues to show that he needs to be accounted for in the future of the organization. Rhee allowed two earned runs and struck out two in 6.1 innings. Rhee picked up his fourth victory for the Smokies. Tony Zych held the Lookouts in check for 1.2 innings with two strikeouts. Frank Batista struck out the side in a scoreless ninth inning.
Tennessee took the lead for good in the third inning after Matt Szczur (1-for-4) reached on a one out single and scored on a double by Javier Baez (2-for-4 with three RBI). A base hit from Justin Bour drove in Baez. John Andreoli (2-for-4) led off the fourth with a double. Rafael Lopez walked and both runners moved up a base on a throwing error. Arismendy Alcantara drew a two out walk. Baez then hit his second double and plated both Andreoli and Lopez. Alcantara then stole home for the Smokies’ fifth run. Tennessee added a run in the seventh after Alcantara walked and scored on a double by Christian Villanueva (2-for-3 with a RBI).

(W) The Smokies’ offense came through when they needed it on Thursday and Tennessee beat Chattanooga 4-3. Starter Nick Struck put Tennessee in a hole after he allowed three earned runs and struck out four in 6.2 innings. A.J. Morris has moved back to the bullpen and struck out a batter in 1.1 scoreless innings. Make it save number 16 for Frank Batista as he worked around a hit in the ninth.
Tennessee started the come back in the fourth inning after Justin Bour (2-for-4 with two RBI) singled, moved to third on a double from Christian Villanueva (1-for-4) and scored on a groundout. Rafael Lopez (2-for-3) led off the fifth with a single. Walks to Arismendy Alcantara and Javier Baez (2-for-3 with a home run) loaded the bases. A single by Bour drove in Lopez and Alcantara. The Smokies broke the tie in the eighth inning on Baez’s 13th home run.

(W) It was a wild finish as Tennessee won in walk-off fashion on Friday and beat Chattanooga 8-6. Knotted at 6-6 in the ninth, John Andreoli (1-for-5) singled and was on board when Javier Baez (2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI) launched his 14th home run to end the ballgame. The Smokies had played from behind the whole game. They erased a 2-0 deficit in the first when Rubi Silva (1-for-5) reached on an error and Justin Bour (1-for-4) singled. A double by Christian Villanueva (1-for-2 with two RBI) brought in both runners. Tennessee was behind 6-2 in the sixth when Jonathan Mota (2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI) homered with Villanueva on base. The Smokies tied the game in the eighth after Silva and Baez led off with singles. Villanueva was issued a one out intentional walk and a base hit from Mota scored Silva and Baez.
Starter Matt Loosen continues to have trouble at the Double-A level. Loosen labored through four innings and allowed six earned runs while striking out five batters. P.J. Francescon settled things down with two scoreless innings, while Armando Rivero looked sharp in striking out four as he held the Lookouts without a run for two innings. Hunter Cervenka shut Chattanooga down in the ninth to pick up his fifth victory of the season.

(L) In a game that saw all of its scoring come late, Tennessee came out on the short end and lost 6-4 to Chattanooga on Saturday. Eric Jokisch allowed four runs (three earned) and struck out five in 6.1 innings. Dayan Diaz finished up the seventh without allowing a run, while Yeiper Castillo gave up two earned runs in two innings. The Smokies tried to paw their way back into things in the seventh after Justin Bour (2-for-3 with a RBI) walked and Rubi Silva (1-for-4) singled. A double from Christian Villanueva plated Bour. Rafael Lopez (1-for-4) and Jonathan Mota (1-for-1) singled to start the eighth and Lopez scored on a sacrifice fly two outs later. Javier Baez (1-for-3 with a RBI) doubled in Mota, and Baez scored on a single from Bour.

Triple-A – Iowa Cubs (58-70)
(W) Pitcher Casey Coleman received a spot start after Jake Arietta was called up to the big leagues. Coleman delivered a 2-1 win over Sacramento. Coleman struck out five in five shutout innings before yielding to Marcos Mateo. Mateo struck out three and allowed an earned run in two innings. Zac Rosscup and Brian Schlitter each tossed a scoreless inning. Rosscup struck out two and Schlitter earned his 17th save.
The I-Cubs took an early lead after Dave Sappelt (1-for-4) and Jae-Hoon Ha (2-for-3 with a home run) led off the game with singles. Sappelt later scored on a groundout. In the fifth inning, Ha led off with a solo home run that ended up being the difference in the game.

(L) It just wasn’t Iowa’s day on Thursday as the I-Cubs lost 9-1 to Sacramento. The highlight happened in the third inning after Edwin Maysonet (2-for-4) singled, moved to third on a base hit from Luis Flores (1-for-3), and scored on a sacrifice fly. Brooks Raley took the hill and struck out seven while allowing four earned runs in six innings. Jeffry Antigua took over and gave up five earned runs and struck out two in three innings.
(L) Another bullpen failure was at the root of Iowa’s 5-2 loss to New Orleans on Friday. The I-Cubs were staked to a 2-0 lead in the first after Jae-Hoon Ha (2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI) went deep with Julio Borbon (1-for-5) on board. Yoanner Negrin was sharp as he struck out seven and allowed two earned runs in six innings. Alberto Cabrera continued his struggles, and gave up three earned runs in an inning. Marcus Hatley was called on to pick up the pieces and he struck out two in a scoreless inning.

(L) Iowa just couldn’t push a run across on Saturday and they were shut out 3-0 by New Orleans. Justin Grimm was the victim of poor run support. Grimm allowed three earned runs while striking out eight in seven innings. Zac Rosscup worked around a hit and struck out the side in the eighth. Ty Wright went 2-for-4.

Rookie League – AZL Cubs (10-8) (23-23)
(W) Daury Torrez struck out seven in five scoreless innings as the Cubs blitzed the Diamondbacks 13-4 on Wednesday. Luis Villabla also had four strikeouts as he tossed two scoreless. Jesse Hodges (1-for-3) drove in four runs, while Trevor Stevens was 3-for-4 with an RBI.

(L) The Cubs fell behind 5-1 by the third inning on Thursday and couldn’t make up the deficit, as they lost 9-7 to the Padres. Rehabbing infielder Greg Rohan played third and was 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Brian Bogusevic went 1-for-2 with a double. David Garner gave up two earned runs in two innings while Trevor Graham was hit hard and surrendered three earned runs in 0.2 innings.

(W) The Cubs pitched a rarity for the Rookie League on Friday as they shutout the Padres 6-0. Trevor Graham tossed three scoreless innings while Carlos Rodriguez earned the win with three innings and a strikeout. Brian Bogusevic was 4-for-4 with a double, a triple, and two RBI. Mark Malave drove in a run and was 2-for-4 with a double.

(W) Once again, the Cubs took advantage of another team’s bullpen and came from behind to beat the Reds 9-7 on Saturday. Alberto Mineo (1-for-4) drove in three and Kevin Brown was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Erick Leal struck out six while allowing three earned runs in five innings, while Luis Villalba tossed two shutout innings and with six strikeouts.
